Paper Straws

Blackbird Events is LOVING these delightful and environmentally conscious alternative to the plastic straw.  These lined up in glasses for your signature drink would be adorable, or you could even consider a Milkshake Bar as an alternative to a late night snack.  Paper straws have that vintage and endearing charm that would entice your wedding guests to treat themselves.

Most paper straws are biodegradable and even compostable so for green couples looking for sweet details for their big day, these are a great idea.

Feeding the Troops

I’ve noticed over the past few years that packing unbelievably cute lunches or snacks for your wedding party has become a very popular thing to do… And it is a GREAT idea!

Members of your wedding party have dedicated their day to give you a hand and support, so ensuring that they have a few niceties throughout the day is a lovely gesture.  Because you are likely to be very busy, it’s great to plan ahead to have some snacks available as you travel between ceremony, photography and reception locations.

Depending on your schedule, you might want to pack full lunches, or perhaps just some nibblies.  And include some bottles of water so everyone can stay refreshed.

There are many creative ways to accomplish this and you could definitely incorporate your wedding theme and colours, or individualize based on your wedding party personalities.  Think about:

– Brown paper bags with your monogram

– Superhero lunch boxes

– Old fashioned lunch pails

– Lunches packed and tied in a charming handkerchief or scarf

– Cute boxes lined with parchment

– Fabric sacs

There are lots of options!  Make sure to include some healthy choices like veggie sticks or whole wheat crackers along with a treat or two like chocolate or gummy snacks.  It would be a nice idea to pack some breath mints as well for after the snack!

Here is an idea and some instructions for up-cycling some kitchen tins or cans:

I used baby formula tins, but you could use coffee cans, nut tins or even food-safe, unused paint cans would be fun!


Next, I measured the length and circumference of the tin and cut a piece of craft paper to fit.  It is secured with double sided tape.  I also used a craft circle cutter to cut pieces for the lids.


Then, using some hot glue, I tied ribbons around the tins.  All the ribbons matched or were complementary, but I had some fun playing around with this.


Next, I made some labels to attach using circle cutters and my printer!  These could be any shape or size, use a monogram or stamps, have wedding party names on them…  the sky’s the limit!

 Attach to the tin with some hot glue and voila!  A super cute snack box!


5 Reasons It Is a Brilliant Idea to Hire a Wedding Planner

Ok, so yeah, this is a totally gratuitous and selfish post about why I think it you should hire a wedding planner… or more specifically… me!   But really, I actually do think it is a fantastic idea to get some help in planning what is known as “the most important day of your life!”

When I planned my own wedding in 2007, I was gung ho and excited about doing my own planning (I am the wedding planning type after all).  However, in hind sight, despite knowing my own skills and abilities, and having fun during the process… an expert to help me along the way would have been an awesome added bonus.

Planning a wedding takes an ENORMOUS amount of time.  In fact, stats in Canada show the average wedding takes about 250 hours of planning time.   For the better part of a year, while working a full time job, I lived and breathed my wedding.  I spent every spare moment crafting, organizing, phoning, searching, pondering, deciding and sometimes stressing about every little detail of my big day.

While much of this was great fun for me, the biggest drawback to doing everything myself, with no planner, was that come the wedding weekend… I also had to rely on myself and friends and family to pull off all the details I had organized.  I was so tired the weekend of my wedding and barely had a moment to breathe and enjoy… I was a little distracted with ensuring everything I had worked so hard at creating was pulled off well.  It would have been so nice to have some professional help… (and I am not talking therapy here).

So…  what are my 5 reasons I should have hired a planner?

1. Time

We are all so busy!  Work, family, kids, commitments, obligations.  It can be difficult to find the time to wedding plan.  A wedding planner can organize the tasks you need to do so that you can maximize the use of your time, AND they can often take on a lot of the menial tasks themselves freeing you up to do the important things.


2. Wedding Day Management

When you’ve worked so hard to create all the little details of your wedding day, wouldn’t it be nice to sit back and enjoy them?  A wedding planner will co-ordinate with your vendors, venue and take care of tasks themselves to ensure your vision is brought to life.  This way you, your friends and family can do what they should be doing… celebrating!


3. Save Money

A wedding planner can save you money? Oh yes!!  A big part of a wedding planner’s job is to help you create a detailed budget and stick to it.  They can help you focus on the important elements of your day allocate dollars where they make the most sense.  A planners experience, contacts and creativity can also point you in the direction of some great bargains!

But doesn’t a wedding planner cost money?  Yes…but perhaps not as much as you think! Not all wedding planners looking for the big-budget wedding.  Many charge a percentage of your budget and are happy to work with couples with smaller budget weddings.


4. Support

Your wedding planner will NEVER get tired of you talking about and being excited about your wedding.  They are there to bounce ideas off of and listen to all your needs wishes.  They can even mediate when there is a conflict whether with family members or vendors.

Blackbird Events First Blog Post!!

Hello World!


Welcome to the Blackbird Blog! I am so excited (and a little nervous too!) to start this Blog… it has been something I have been thinking about for a long time. As I gear up for the official launch of Blackbird Events, my wedding and event planning company in Calgary, Alberta, I am looking forward to sharing my ideas, finds and helpful information here!

I have loved to party plan and organize events for friends and family for YEARS . My absolute passion is to find the most creative and wow worthy ideas for parties… without breaking the bank. Anyone can throw money at an event and make it amazing, but it takes a lot of thought and effort to do it on the cheap!

I hope that my future blog entries will inspire readers to get creative, think about wedding planning from different angles and maybe even have a little fun with their planning process!
